forgot root pw Empty forgot root pw

Post by Bill_G 10th June 2024, 1:15 pm

AFIK, I used the old one with an extra character on the end. I went through most of the keyboard trying to guess it. No luck.

Now, I have been trying to rescue my root password.
First step is "at boot, select SAFE or Recovery or press "e"."
Where is "at boot"???? I guess it isn't the log in window. I'll try again.

Can I use the installer without the root pw? That would solve the problem, provided the new install gets new pw's.

Maybe this...

create a new user in User-Manager, then Copy/Sync my settings to theirs (maybe entire home) , then probably give them some special privileges - I probably gave them the same Group Memberships as I had. Test, play - see if it works, then delete my user. Obviously gave them a password in User-Manager, don't recall how, but probably user and root passwords.

After taking the virtual keyboard in the Login screen, and then closing the virtual keyboard, we can't see the icon (button) to unhide the characters in the password as we type.
But, clicking on the place it was there, we can really unhides the password.
It is just that the icon (of a crossed out eye) is missing.

Ok. I found "at boot". The screen lasts .0001 seconds, but I was fast and typed the "e" and got the next screen. Changed ro to rw. Had no idea what to do next and so that was that.

Tried to create a new user but that requires root pw.

Boot the live iso. Using root privileges, copy the first line from /etc/shadow from the live iso to your /etc/shadow install.
That should reset to the default root password on your install.

In the grub line press e and edit linux line as

replace ro using rw and add after that init=/bin/bash and then boot (F10).

When cli boot has finished, run

Code:
passwd root
reboot
