I made EZupdater if you prefer a more simpler setup. It will only show in the panel if there is an update available.

I'm testing PCLOS Debian Mate and the Mate bar has an Updates icon, is it the same?

Simple Update Notifier is a full version updater and is default on all the iso flavors. EZnotifier is on the Plasma Mini as default.
EZnotifier if you prefer to use it instead then uninstall Simple Update Notifier.

I'll continue with Simple Update Notifier, it's working very well.
